FURIOUS motorists today demanded answers after sections of the A66 were closed for up to seven hours.

Commuters writing on gazettelive.co.uk said it appeared the major road - the main arterial route between Teesside and County Durham - had not Turn to Page 4 NO-GO ZONE: The scene on the A66 between Darlington and Stockton yesterday as police closed the icy road to traffic been gritted. One commuter, who was travelling from Darlington into Middlesbrough, said: "Police were diverting traffic onto a B-road through Longnewton and the A66 was shut. It just seems there's something wrong when you're diverted onto a B-road that actually appears safer than the major trunk road to Teesside." Another comment from jasong read: "I saw about half a dozen accidents from Cannon Park all the way to the A66 roundabout at Darlington. It was like the road hadn't been gritted at all."
