A TEESSIDE man who drowned after plunging through ice into the River Tees could have saved himself but refused to let go of his beloved dogs, an inquest heard.

John Butterfield, 51, of Lamport Close, Stockton, fell through the ice after attempting to rescue his two Staffordshire Bull Terriers who had both fallen through moments earlier.
