Summary
Winter roads should be safer in North Yorkshire with more efficient storing of salt stocks. The county council executive has approved construction of 11 large salt barns for road salting plus development of new highway offices. The seven new centres will include Whitby, Richmond and Thirsk. Existing highway depots at Whitby, Malton, Pickering and Kirkbymoorside will be sold as part of the rationalisation of the service, but highways chiefs say that jobs will not be cut as a result.
