NEXT April marks a very special anniversary -40 years ago Labour's James Callaghan introduced the Age Aaddition Allowance, a 0.25p a week cash boost for the over 80s.

Back in 1971 the 0.25p allowance, set in line with a price of a bag of coal, was a valuable top up to the weekly pounds 5 state pension.
