IN 2010, any young person who has been claiming Jobseekers' Allowance for 12 months will be guaranteed an employment opportunity for at least six months.

This pledge by the government is part of its Backing Young Britain campaign to help 18 - 24 year olds on to the career ladder during the recession. It also means that employers in certain sectors may benefit from additional help with the application process to recruit trained staff, and even a pounds 1,000 subsidy for taking on unemployed people with particular backgrounds. The Routes Into Work initiative as part of this, aims to provide 100,000 job opportunities by preparing young jobseekers for roles in a specific sector that has vacancies, including retail, health and care, hospitality, leisure and tourism and contact centres. It is supported by a number of sector skills councils and means that, in exchange for committing a number of vacancies, employers can work with Jobcentre Plus to design pre-employment training programmes funded by the Learning and Skills Council. In early 2010, Jobcentre Plus in the North-east will be working to prepare young jobseekers for opportunities in the care and call centre sectors, where a number of vacancies are expected. Jobcentre advisers will look to match people with existing skills to such vacancies, help to identify those who have transferable skills and will also look to provide training for those who need to develop new skills.
