A LEADING North-east MEP will be among more than a dozen Labour colleagues opposing Britain's opt out from the working time directive as the row over hours enters its final stages today.

Steven Hughes, the socialists' spokesman on employment issues, has been a leading campaigner against the opt out - first secured by the Tories in 1993 - which means UK employers are legally entitled to ask staff to sign away their right to a maximum 48-hour week.
