Marton Hall ... Then and Now ; in Association With

Summary

ONCE upon a time a magnificent Victorian mansion stood in Stewart Park in Middlesbrough. It was called Marton Hall, but only a colonnade from this building survives today. Marton Hall was built for Henry Bolckow, one of the founding fathers of Middlesbrough, as a residence befitting his status as co-owner of Bolckow and Vaughan, the massive iron works on the banks of the Tees. The building was completed in the 1860s and was in two distinct styles of architecture, reflecting that it had been constructed in two stages.

The magnificent mansion was set in beautiful grounds, which we know today as Stewart Park, Henry Bolckow being the philanthropist that he was often opened his grounds and gardens to the public. So even in the days when the grounds and gardens were private property, the people of Middlesbrough could often enjoy their beauty. Henry Bolckow died without an heir in 1878 and by 1907 Marton Hall was empty and fell into disrepair.
