Margaret Lives a Dog's Life for Strays

Summary

SOME may think she's barking mad but for Margaret Young a day spent in the kennels is nothing to help raise funds for her beloved pooches. Margaret, the chair and founder of animal charity Save Our Strays, lived a dog's life for a day to help boost the charity coffers, dressing as a dog and living in a kennel. But Margaret took it all in her stride, saying it was worth it to keep the cause on its feet. Margaret, 60, a retired teacher who set up the charity about seven years ago, said: "We have a lot of dogs with us, both adults and puppies. We took a lot over the Christmas period - that happens every year. Because of the bad weather we had to cancel a lot of fundraising events last month so we're desperate for funds as we were relying on that." Save Our Strays is supported by loyal volunteers but Margaret says costs can be high - about pounds 5,000 a month including vets' fees, and any support is a huge help. One dog who's looking forward to a brighter future after being taken in by the charity is Rottweiler Baz who is staying at the Old Park Farm kennels in Guisborough where Margaret took on her challenge. Margaret explained: "When Baz came to us he was about three times the size he is now because he had a full-body infection and was incredibly swollen.

We didn't think he was going to make it, but after treatment he's much better. "Dogs like Baz will need continuing medication so we provide a 'pension plan' for them when they're rehomed - we will pay his vets' bills for the rest of his life.
