Looking Back

Summary

MALCOLM "Mac" Murray was interested to read our feature on the demise of the original Star and Garter Hotel which once stood on Marton Road in Middlesbrough.

The feature about the demolition of this ornately decorated Victorian building prompted several letters to the paper. However, Malcolm Murray, from Netherfields, brought a rare colour photograph of the hotel for Remember When readers to see. The picture was taken by Malcolm in 1981 and shows the demolition of the hotel shortly after it had begun. You may notice two figures above the window which has just lost its ornamental masonry top. Neither of the two men appears to be wearing any kind of safety gear, not even helmets, which is somewhat surprising given the height and age of the building. Shortly after this photograph was taken the Star and Garter disappeared from our skyline forever.
