Summary


Reading about "ghost ships" at Hartlepool got me going back in time. How many people remember when ships were brought up the Tees, just down river of Kelley's Ferry, landing on the Thornaby side of the river? There they were broken up for scrap.

One incident stands out in my mind when a ship was scrapped down to its keel and the keel was blown up. A piece of the keel was blown across the river into Maritime Street where it struck the front of a sub power station (which is still there), and was deflected across the street where it hit and killed a young girl called Eileen Thomas who lived in Elliott Street, Portrack.
