SIMON Bailes' obsessive drive for perfection has been something of a double-edged sword. It has meant sacrificing more weekends than he cares to remember and has caused the odd spark with people who don't share his work ethic.

But the Teessider's life in the fast lane has also enabled his motor retailing business, Simon Bailes Limited, to make single- digit profits in its 30th year on revenues of around pounds 35m. Not bad going in light of the car industry's recent crash, which has resulted in massive cuts in production, sales and jobs across the globe.
