Summary


Brazil 1950 & Switzerland 1954 England's first finals included the infamous 1-0 defeat at the hands of the USA. While most nations were wearing practical lightweight kits, England heroes Wilf Mannion and George Hardwick were stuck with their archaic and starchy dress- style shirts, baggy shorts and heavy-duty stockings. For the match against the Americans, England changed into unfamiliar blue shirts.

The kits used in Switzerland four years later featured slightly more comfortable shirts but still looked old hat next to the suave South Americans' modern stylings.
