Summary

THIS interesting photograph of Ellis's newsagent's shop on Borough Road, Middlesbrough, has been sent to us by Geoffrey Robinson, who writes: It was taken in about 1922 when young Clifford, my uncle, was about four years old. Here he stands with his parents, my grandparents, George and Amy Ellis. Upstairs, you could have your doll mended by an expert, Frank Adkin, who was Amy's brother and held his nephews spellbound with his craft and workmanship.

George's father, Thomas Ellis, had originally established a newsagents at 389, Newport Road, around 1908. The shop pictured here was owned by the family until the 1970s, I think, and my abiding memory of it was the stockroom, which contained shelves upon shelves of old cartons of cigarettes and boxes of chocolate bars and other sweets. The aroma stays with me to this day.
