Gender Bias in the Computer Industry

Summary

By GABBY KENT, right, senior lecturer in computer games art and design, Teesside University THERE will always be a gender bias towards men in the games industry just as there will always be a bias towards women in nursing. I can't see this changing a great deal in the near future but as long as the industry doesn't intentionally exclude women then it doesn't pose a problem.

However, as a university we can educate girls in schools on the potential careers in the games industry. By delivering talks and workshops for schools and colleges we hope to make teenagers aware of the range of roles available to them in the industry. Our Girls And Gadgets conference is aimed at teenage girls and presents a range of talks and workshops and positive female role models working in digital industries who discuss their career paths and roles in detail. As one of the initial steering committee members of the Women In Games conference I helped organise and host the 2006 conference on our campus.
