MIDDLESBROUGH A, joint winners of last seasons A division, were soundly beaten in the first match of the season by Stockton's Elmwood Community centre team.

Chess In recent years Elmwood have been weakened by the loss of several star players and last season just managed to escape relegation. This season they have lost another two stalwarts but this loss certainly did not prevent them from beating Middlesbrough by the score of 3-2. Elmwood's John Garnett on board 1 outplayed seasoned campaigner John Boyers. Napoleon Maluping on board 2 was gifted the game when Boro's Nathan Huntley overlooked the loss of a piece.
