IN 1996, the Lib Dem federal party conference decided university tuition fees were a bad idea and students should not have to pay them. Leader Paddy Ashdown wanted to impose university tuition fees on students and the proposal was rejected by the conference.

Several times since then the Lib Dem federal conference has been asked to reconsider by various leaders but has always rejected it.
