Referendum On Elected Mayors ; Residents Across Boroughs to Get Vote

THE people of Stockton and Redcar and Cleveland are to be consulted on whether they want elected mayors. Changes in legislation mean all councils will have to adopt either a system involving a council leader with a cabinet, or a directly elected mayor with a cabinet. Early next year, Stockton Council will organise a referendum on a preferred model, in which all local government electors will be able to vote, with the new system introduced in 2011.
