Easy Win Means a Change at the Top ; Table Tennis

WITH a 9-1 victory over Hartlepool B, Nunthorpe B have taken over the top spot in Division 2 of the Cleveland and District Summer Table Tennis League. The architects of Nunthorpe's victory were David Hildreth and Bernie Welford who both scored hat-tricks while Gordon Whitfield won two, losing only to Alan Hind in a mammoth five-game set.

Adams On a High ; Tees Rider Celebrates Great Result at Trials

STOCKTON'S international rider James Adams took a highly creditable fourth place overall at the 2009 Mitsubishi Motors Hartpury Horse Trials. James, who is based at Whinney Hill, was in action in the CCI* section along side Zara Phillips who he beat by one point.

Cleveland Under-12s fared well in the recent Minor Counties Festival of Cricket at The Royal Hospital School, Ipswich, finishing in fourth place from eight teams. The local youngsters showed some early festival form in their opening game of the tournament when they held the host county - Suffolk - to a winning draw.

CLEVELAND firefighter Tony McGouran extinguished his rivals as he blazed to a lifetime cycling best in the Emergency Services national road race championships. The 43-year-old was first veteran, third in the fire service competition and seventh overall after burning around 85 undulating miles in Staunton, Gloucestershire.

CLEVELAND Juniors FC are planning for the future by introducing an academy to help the club grow in size. Each Saturday from September 5, free training sessions will take place on Mill Hill playing fields on St Mary's Walk, Acklam, Middlesbrough.

Acklam Trophy Returns to Tibs

TIBS FC reclaimed the Acklam Cup that was narrowly lost to Monkton FC in last year's final. After finishing their group games with a 2-1 win against Seaton Carew, thanks to Finn Byrne's last-minute winner, a 5-3 win over Kader B, Owen and Coxon both grabbing a couple of goals apiece and a 2-2 draw with Cleveland, they progressed to the Acklam Under-11 Football Tournament semi-final against Kader.

The charity cash is still rolling in after the Riding For The Troops team of 12 completed their Land's End to John O'Groats challenge.

MEMBERS of Tees Active Sports Academy braved the tail end of hurricane Bill, the unseasonably cool August weather and a dark and cold River Tees to take part in a team-building session at Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre Sports Academy manager Allan McDermott divided the academy members into a yellow and white team, with team captains Jonny Wood and Chris Wilkinson drawing names out of a hat to decide the members of each team.
