999 response is best in country as call volume rises

THE North East Ambulance Service responded to more than 400,000 emergency and urgent calls last year. A report from The NHS Information Centre shows demand on the service is continuing to increase year on year.

Now owner Jude Medd, 56, is hopping off to Ibiza for a well- earned rest. And the whole five-acre complex of boarding kennels, cattery, bed and breakfast barn and caravan and camping site is on the market for a cool pounds 595,000.

Evening buses to link villages

NEW-STYLE evening and weekend bus services are on the way for villagers to the west of Stockton. The Village Link vehicles will operate an hourly circular route linking Stillington, Thorpe Thewles, Whitton, Bishopton, Carlton, Redmarshall, Elton and Long Newton with Stockton High Street and the University Hospital of North Tees.

REMEMBER When has in recent months featured the demolition of the North Riding Infirmary, St Mary's Cathedral, Thornaby's old Town Centre and part of Stockton's High Street. Today we remember another unique building, which was destroyed in the name of progress, Thornaby Railway Station.

Janet's mother Beatrice Hopper attended one of the two schools and is circled in this photograph.

ENORMOUS underground Teesside caverns, hollowed out by decades of mining, could soon become giant dumps for hazardous waste, it was reported. American company Coastal Caverns Inc wanted to use 15 brine caverns, all over 1,000ft under land between Billingham and Hartlepool, to store "locally generated hazardous waste".

DRAMA STAGES TOWN RETURN ; Theatre reopens

MIDDLESBROUGH Theatre is set to re-open following the installation of a new safety curtain. The theatre had to close in May after a fault was found in the fire curtain during routine maintenance checks.

REDCAR beach will become a football pitch for an inaugural sand soccer tournament. Teesside Athletic FC - soon to be renamed Redcar Athletic - will host the event on Sunday, August 23 from 10am-6pm. In addition to the football there will be beach-themed entertainment for all the family.
